Countdown to Cannes 2010: The Films: KABOOM

Posted by Celyn on May 05, 2010 • News & Articles

Araki’s tenth film, ‘Kaboom‘ will be one of Cannes 2010’s Midnight screenings, and looks to be the continuation of the director’s artistic and philosophical manifesto. The film deals with the sexual awakening of group of college students, though somewhat confusingly bills itself as a science fiction, seemingly moving away from Araki’s usual generic monotony.

The best synopsis Ive found floating around the net has the film billed in this rather intriguing manner:

A hyper-stylized ‘Twin Peaks’ for the Coachella Generation, featuring a gorgeous, super hot young cast, ’Kaboom’ is a wild and sex-drenched horror-comedy thriller that tells the story of Smith (Thomas Dekker), an ambisexual 18-year-old college freshman who stumbles upon a monstrous conspiracy in a seemingly idyllic Southern California seaside town…

Smith’s everyday life in the dorms – hanging out with his arty, sarcastic best friend Stella, hooking up with a beautiful free spirit named London, lusting for his gorgeous but dim surfer roommate Thor – all gets turned upside-down after one fateful, terrifying night. Tripping on some hallucinogenic cookies he ate at a party, Smith is convinced he’s witnessed the gruesome murder of an enigmatic Red Haired Girl who has been haunting his dreams.

How could you not be tickled by that plot?!

“Greenberg” actress Temple lands three indie roles

Posted by Celyn on March 24, 2010 • Film, News & Articles

Juno Temple, who appears opposite Ben Stiller in “Greenberg,” has booked three roles that position her as an indie actress to watch.

First, the 21-year-old Temple joins the ensemble cast of “Dirty Girl,” the drama from Killer Films in which she plays the title character, a notorious high school slut who runs away with her closeted gay classmate to drive from Oklahoma to California to find the father she’s never met.

Milla Jovovich, William H. Macy, Dwight Yoakam and Mary Steenburgen round out the cast of the movie, which Abe Sylvia is directing from his own script.

Temple then segues to “Goodnight Moon,” a drama from writer-director Elgin James, in which she’ll star opposite AnnaSophia Robb. The film centers on two girls who find themselves in trouble after they run away to Los Angeles; the roles were highly sought in the indie world for that age bracket.

Finally, Temple will turn to “Jack & Diane,” a love story between two teenage girls, one of whom occasionally turns into a werewolf as a representation of all-consuming love and desire. Bradley Rust Gray wrote the script and is directing the drama, which is not billed as a horror movie.

Of Temple, James said: “She taught me a lot about the character that I created on paper. This is what Peter Jackson must have felt like when he worked with Kate Winslet in ‘Heavenly Creatures.’ It’s that feeling you’re working with a talent that is going to break out.”

Jen Gatien, one of the producers of “Jack & Diane,” said Temple’s name was submitted after Ellen Page, who was attached to the movie, dropped out.

“Those were big shoes to fill, but when we met her, we and the director knew instantly,” Gatien said. “She looks like she’s from the East Village and has this angelic quality to her. We had to firm down our schedule so she’d be in the film because we knew she was in demand.”

British-born Temple appeared in “Atonement” and the comedy “Year One.”

“Cracks” Out on DVD March 29

Posted by Celyn on March 15, 2010 • Film

Cracks is the sensuous and erotically charged debut from filmmaker Jordan Scott, a story of innocence not lost, but taken. In a remote and austere all girl’s boarding school in rural Ireland, an elite clique of girls are the revered members of the diving team.

Their undisputed queen is the captivating and avant-garde teacher, Miss G (Eva Green, Casino Royale, The Dreamers) – and the focus for the girls’ adolescent infatuations, especially that of Di Radfield (Juno Temple, Atonement, St Trinians), team captain and Miss G’s ‘favourite’.

Thriving on the attention, Miss G considers it her duty to teach her charges the ways of the world, regaling them with tales of her bohemian adventures. But cracks soon emerge in their idyllic enclave with the arrival of a mysterious Spanish pupil, Fiamma (Maria Valverde, King of The Hill).

Exotic and appealing, she doesn’t look for approval to her peers and, despite Di’s machinations, becomes the increasing focus of Miss G’s attentions.

Seeing through Miss G’s worldly facade, Fiamma’s rebuttal of her friendship sets in motion a mesmerising tale of infatuation, jealousy and betrayal, as the girls discover terrible things can happen when fantasy collides with reality.

Featuring stunning cinematography from Academy Award nominated John Mathieson (Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven) which perfectly encapsulates the fairytale qualities at the film’s heart, Cracks is a worthy entry in the canon of classics of ‘innocence lost’ alongside Picnic at Hanging Rock and Heavenly Creatures.

Cracks is released 29th March
